While your concrete options are limitless, in today’s blog post, we’ll be talking specifically about concrete driveways. Many of our concrete floor leveling clients are looking for concrete driveway repair or a new concrete driveway, and we’d like to share a few pros and cons of concrete driveways. If you’re in need of concrete leveling or concrete pouring, contact us today!

Pros

Long-Lasting

Concrete driveways last for a very long time! Concrete is an incredibly strong material, and when you invest in a concrete driveway you can count on it to last for a long time. In general, concrete driveways last between 25-30 years — though this longevity depends on how well it was installed and how well you maintain the driveway. Getting concrete leveling when your driveway cracks can help extend the life of your driveway.

More Design Options

If you choose an asphalt or gravel driveway, you really only have one visual option. With gravel, you could mix up the color of the stone, but that’s about it. When you choose a concrete driveway, you can stain or tint it any color you like. You can also stamp patterns into the concrete to mimic stone or brick, or you can brush the surface to add texture. You can match your concrete driveway to your home’s landscaping and color scheme.

Challenging Installation

While it is possible to pour your own concrete driveway, we highly recommend that you call professional concrete contractors like those at A-1 Concrete Leveling and Foundation Repair to do the job for you. It is very hard work and requires expert timing to ensure that the concrete is properly poured and cured.

That being said, even with professional concrete contractors, the job of installing a concrete driveway is an investment and does take time. Our crew can do the project in a couple of days, but you will also need to wait for the concrete to fully dry before you can use your new concrete driveway. We will remove grass and other vegetation, create wood forms, add a base of gravel,  install rebar, pour concrete, and finish the concrete. All in all, it does take a considerable amount of time, but the results are worth it!

Easy Maintenance

Gravel and asphalt driveways require more maintenance than a concrete driveway, so while it may be labor-intensive to install, it won’t cause you headaches down the road. And if you do end up getting a crack in your concrete driveway and need driveway repair, our concrete contractors can come out and quickly perform concrete leveling.

You’ll also need to do some maintenance on your own, like scrubbing the surface with a hose and adding a concrete sealer to protect the surface.

Cons

Costs More Than Asphalt

In general, a concrete driveway costs around 45 to 50 percent more than an asphalt driveway. However, both prices fluctuate depending on where in Nashville you live, the complexity of the job, and the size of your driveway. While concrete does cost more upfront, you will save money down the road as an asphalt driveway will need to be repaired more frequently than a concrete driveway.

Performs Poorly in Extreme Cold

Concrete can buckle, heave, or crack in very cold winters as the ground freezes and thaws. However, here in Nashville, we have relatively mild winters and this is less of a problem than it is in more northern states. Salt can also leave stains and blotches on concrete.

Not Very DIY-Friendly

If you’re someone who wants to create their own driveway, concrete is not the way to go. Pouring a concrete driveway involves a lot of skill and hard labor, which is why it is always best to hire a concrete contractor from A-1 Concrete Leveling and Foundation Repair to do the job for you. The same holds true for concrete repairs. Without the proper equipment and experience, a homeowner cannot complete concrete floor leveling for their own concrete driveway.

Not The Most Attractive

While we believe concrete is a beautiful surface, we know that not everyone feels that way! Even with decorative color-etching and stamping, you still may think that concrete just isn’t the building material you want for your aesthetic. And that’s totally ok! There’s a reason why concrete isn’t a unique building material — it’s an incredibly durable, affordable, and long-lasting driveway material, and many people are looking for just that for their home. However, slate or brick or asphalt may be right for you, and you should certainly explore all of your options!
